Welcome to Little Catalina, Newfoundland

Calvary Memorial
United Church

Calvary Memorial United Church was officially opened in 1914. It was built by a local, master carpenter, Mr. Jabez Johnson, Sr., and volunteers from the community.

When the decision was made to build a new church, the ladies of the community started a fundraiser and raised $600.00. The framing and timber for the church were cut in the nearby woods. With lots of hard work and free labour, the church was completed in about twenty months and had a debt of less than $700.00, which was quickly repaid by the people of the town.

The people of Little Catalina were not always affiliated with the United Church of Canada. The first church in Little Catalina was opened on July 26, 1885, and there were two religious groups living here - the Methodist and the Anglican. Because there was only one church, the two groups would alternate the use of the church - the Methodist held their service on one Sunday and the Anglican on the next Sunday.

The Salvation Army also established a church that operated for a few years during the middle of the 20th. century. Some United Parishioners would leave their church after Sunday evening service and attend what was left of the Army service.
